Dave Bieter is a big fan of "open space" and wants the city to spend another $10 million to buy up more privately owned land connect it to previously purchased "open space", thus "protecting" this land from future development.
But the truth is that this open space is really a further expansion of an "urban sprawl boundary", or "urban growth boundary". It is intended to prevent the further growth of Boise outside of the current boundary. Urban sprawl boundaries are addressed in Chapter 7 of Agenda 21, 7.18. The UN recognizes efforts by Smart Growth to promote urban growth boundaries and stop what they define as urban sprawl. These boundaries are necessary to create human settlements and contain them. With these boundaries, high density housing will remove all need for a car, and the only available transportation out of this boundary is mass transportation provided by the government, freedoms are severely restricted if not eliminated. One other downfall is the loss of revenue from land that cannot be developed or used for other purposes. Land in government hands does not generate revenues. Boundaries create an economic loss to the city, county, and state. They drive up the cost of land within the boundary itself. Here are examples of Smart Growth and urban growth boundaries across the United States. An Independent Policy Report explains how Smart Growth creates unaffordable housing. Idaho has a Smart Growth Chapter. Contact Mayor Bieter and the Boise City Council. Let them know you are opposed to any further creation of open spaces. Educate both on Agenda 21. Let the free market decide how these lands should be developed and used, not a government that continues to take private land out of the hands of Americans.
